GENITAL SKIN CONDITIONS PERTH

Why does the skin down there look different?

You notice redness, bumps, itching, or something just looks… off. Maybe it’s uncomfortable, maybe it’s painful, or maybe you’re just wondering “Is this normal?”

Genital skin conditions are common and can have many causes—not all of them are related to STIs. Skin irritation, inflammatory conditions like eczema or psoriasis, and infections can all affect the genital area. If you’ve noticed changes in your skin, seeking medical advice can help identify the cause and provide appropriate management.

At My Sexual Health in Joondalup, we provide professional assessment and treatment for genital skin conditions in a supportive, confidential environment.

What does a genital skin condition feel like?

If you have any of these symptoms, it’s worth getting checked out:

  1. Itching, burning, or pain—especially if it’s getting worse.
  2. Bumps, ulcers, or blisters—these can indicate STIs like herpes or genital warts or a skin condition.
  3. Redness, whiteness, thinning or thickened skin—sometimes linked to skin conditions like lichen sclerosus or eczema.
  4. Cracks, splitting, or peeling skin—which can be painful and prone to infection.
  5. Pain during sex or urination—skin irritation or inflammation could be the cause.

Skin changes down there can be caused by anything from irritation from soaps, hormonal changes to fungal infections, viruses, or chronic skin conditions. Some clear up on their own, while others need treatment to prevent long-term scarring and serious complications like cancer.

GENITAL SKIN CONDITIONS CAUSES

What causes genital skin conditions?

Genital skin conditions can be infectious, inflammatory, or just the result of irritation. Some of the most common causes include:

Infections

  1. Fungal infections (like thrush or tinea).
  2. Viral infections (Herpes, HPV, or Molluscum contagiosum).
  3. Bacterial infections (including folliculitis or syphilis sores).
  4. Parasitic infestations (scabies or pubic lice).

Inflammatory and chronic skin conditions

  1. Eczema – Yes, you can get eczema on the genitals! It can be dry, itchy, and easily irritated.
  2. Psoriasis – Can cause red, scaly patches and irritation.
  3. Lichen sclerosus – Can make the skin thin, fragile, and prone to tearing.
  4. Lichen planus – May cause white, lacy patches and discomfort.

Other causes

  1. Contact dermatitis – Irritation from soaps, fragrances, or certain fabrics.
  2. Hormonal changes – Menopause, pregnancy, or birth control can affect skin sensitivity.
  3. Pre-cancerous or cancerous conditions – Uncommon but important to rule out.

Many genital skin conditions aren’t contagious and have nothing to do with STIs—but if something is linked to an infection, early treatment is key.

What happens when you see a doctor about your skin?

First, we listen. There’s no rush, no judgement—just an open conversation about what’s going on.

During your consultation at My Sexual Health, we may:

  1. Take a full history – When did the symptoms start? Have they changed over time?
  2. Examine the skin – We may need to check the genital area and possibly other parts of the body if the condition is widespread.
  3. Do swabs, blood tests, or a biopsy – If needed, we can run tests to confirm a diagnosis.

Once we know what’s causing the issue, we’ll create a treatment plan that’s right for you.
