SEXUAL HEALTH SPECIALIST PERTH

From the moment you walk in…

At My Sexual Health in Joondalup, we understand that for many patients, these appointments are deeply personal. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re returning for ongoing care, we’re here to make you feel safe, respected, and heard

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by our friendly reception team. Your first appointment is all about understanding you—your concerns, your health history, and your goals. We’ll talk through your symptoms (if you have any), what’s been going on, and what you’d like help with. It’s a relaxed conversation in a judgement-free space.

If you’re coming in for a specific service like an IUD insertion, gender affirming care, or a check for recurring vaginal discharge, we’ll tailor the appointment to suit. We may suggest a physical examination or testing, but these are always explained clearly—and only done with your full consent.

Your comfort matters

We know intimate health can bring up a mix of emotions: embarrassment, anxiety, even fear. That’s why we practise trauma-informed care. If there’s a history of trauma, or you feel uncomfortable with an examination, we can delay it until you’re ready. A chaperone can be present if needed, and self-collection options (like swabs) are available.

For trans and gender-diverse patients, we understand that genital examinations may cause dysphoria. Unless there’s a clear medical reason, we don’t perform these exams—and we’ll always explain why one might be needed before proceeding.

Sometimes humour helps, sometimes it’s music in the background, or a nurse chatting with you during a procedure. We’ll do whatever we can to help you feel calm.

We take confidentiality seriously. Medical information is securely stored and handled using patient management software that connects with My Health Record (MHR). If you’d prefer your results not to be uploaded to MHR, please let us know during your first visit—this may mean paying private fees and not claiming Medicare rebates.

Patients can request to remain anonymous or use a pseudonym, though this limits access to services like national cervical screening programs and Medicare. If you choose this route, we’ll talk through the implications with you so you can make an informed choice.

What to bring to your appointment

A little prep can help make your appointment smoother. Here’s what’s helpful:

  1. A list of your current medications, treatments, or any creams/pessaries you’re using
  2. Notes on your symptoms or questions you want to ask
  3. Any pathology or imaging reports from previous care
  4. There’s no need to wax or shave; we’re not fussed about body hair.
  5. Your referral: it’s great if you can send this in before your appointment so we can book enough time

If you’re coming in for a persistent vaginal discharge, cervical screen or IUD, try to avoid booking during your period (unless it’s urgent or emergency contraception). If you’re coming for STI testing only, menstruation usually isn’t a problem.

We offer same-day IUD insertions where possible. To ensure it’s safe to proceed, we’ll need to confirm there’s no chance of pregnancy. If you’re unsure, we can discuss this with our practice nurse in advance.

Pain management options—including Penthrox (the “green whistle”)—are available and will be discussed during your consult.

After your visit

Most patients will be asked to return for a follow-up appointment to go through test results and the next steps. In some cases, our nurse may deliver results and provide guidance if further treatment is needed. If your issue can be addressed in a single consultation, we’ll do our best to get it sorted so you can move on with peace of mind.

“Sexual health appointments can feel vulnerable. My job is to make sure you feel comfortable enough to talk openly, and supported enough to take the next step.”
