Vulval health concerns

“Something doesn't feel right down there...”

Maybe it’s itching that won’t stop. Maybe the skin looks different. Maybe sex has become uncomfortable, or you’re dealing with discharge that just keeps coming back.

You might be wondering:

“Is this normal?”

“Should I just try another cream?”

“Am I overreacting?”

Here’s the thing; your vulva shouldn’t constantly itch, burn, hurt, or leave you feeling worried. While many vulval skin conditions and vaginal discharge concerns are common, they’re not something you have to simply put up with.

While this page talks about women’s health, we also care for trans men and gender-diverse people with genital skin symptoms. If you have a vulva and something doesn’t feel right, you’re welcome here.

At My Sexual Health, Dr Michelle Yong provides specialist assessment for women experiencing vulval skin conditions, vulval pain, vulvodynia and recurrent vaginal discharge. We know these symptoms may affect your confidence, relationships and everyday life, and we’re here to help you understand what’s going on.

What can we help with?

Some symptoms are obvious. Others are much harder to explain.

You might notice:

  • Itching that keeps coming back
  • A rash or redness on the vulva
  • Burning or soreness
  • Pain during sex
  • Pain when sitting or wearing tight clothing
  • White patches or changes in the skin
  • Recurrent vaginal thrush
  • Persistent bacterial vaginosis (BV)
  • Vaginal discharge that’s changed colour, smell or amount
  • A feeling that something just isn’t right

Sometimes there’s a simple explanation. Sometimes it takes a more detailed assessment to work out what’s happening.

Either way, you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

“Many women tell me they’ve been putting up with symptoms for months before coming to see me because they thought they just had to live with it. In reality, many vulval conditions can be treated or managed once we know what’s causing them.”

When should you see a sexual health specialist for vulval skin or discharge issues?

If you’re dealing with vulval skin changes, vulval pain or ongoing vaginal discharge, it can be confusing to know where to start: a GP, gynaecologist, dermatologist or sexual health specialist? The answer depends on what’s going on.

Your GP is often the best place to start for many health concerns, and some vulval conditions can be diagnosed and treated in general practice. But when symptoms keep coming back, treatments aren’t working, or the diagnosis isn’t clear, a sexual health specialist can provide a more detailed assessment.

So why a sexual health specialist versus a dermatologist or gynaecologist?

A gynaecologist specialises in conditions affecting the female reproductive organs, such as the uterus, ovaries and cervix. They also manage concerns like heavy periods, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts and perform gynaecological surgery. Some gynaecologists have expertise in vulval conditions, but many focus primarily on reproductive and surgical care.

A dermatologist specialises in diseases of the skin, including chronic inflammatory skin conditions, unusual rashes and skin cancers. If a vulval skin condition requires specialist dermatology care, they may become involved in your treatment.

A sexual health specialist focuses on conditions affecting the genital skin and genital health. At My Sexual Health, Dr Michelle Yong has particular experience in assessing recurrent vaginal discharge, vulval skin conditions including precancerous lesions, vulvodynia and other genital concerns where symptoms are ongoing, recurring or difficult to diagnose. Sexual health physicians also work closely with GPs, gynaecologists, dermatologists and other specialists when a multidisciplinary approach is needed.

If your symptoms would be better managed by another specialist, we’ll explain why and help coordinate your care, so you can feel confident you’re getting the right treatment.

Finding answers, not just treating symptoms

At My Sexual Health, we don’t just look at the symptom; we look at the whole picture.

Your appointment starts with a conversation about what’s been happening, how long it’s been going on, what treatments you’ve already tried, and how it’s affecting your life.

If needed, we may recommend an examination. This is always explained beforehand and only performed with your consent.

Depending on your symptoms, we may also recommend:

  • Swabs to look for infection
  • Blood tests
  • Assessment for vulval skin conditions, which on occasions may require a genital skin biopsy
  • Assessment for vulvodynia or other pain conditions
  • Referral for further investigations if needed

Once we understand what’s causing your symptoms, we’ll talk through your options and work together on a treatment plan that suits you.
